Our contribution at the Federal Garden Show: Raising awareness of transparency and CO₂ emissions

“Rethink flowers, forever.” – the slogan of the Munich-based startup “FlowerMe” implies an innovative approach for a traditional industry. Since the beginning of the year, FlowerMe has been dealing with the subject of transparency and sustainability in the international flower market. The two founders Valentin Braukmann and Sebastian Kneer have set themselves the goal of making the origin and production of flowers more understandable and transparent.

Novel technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain integrations are used for this purpose. The focus is also on nature conservation and the support of regenerative projects. The vision of the two founders is to offset the CO₂ generated during the often emissions-rich supply chain of flowers and to make a climate-positive and regenerative contribution with the consumption of flowers. The installation at the Federal Garden Show 2023 will show in three-dimensional space how much area of rainforest is needed to offset one bunch of roses.

With a market share of 38%, the rose is the most popular flower in Germany, but because it is imported from South American and African countries, it also has correspondingly enhanced CO₂ emissions. As a result, concepts such as FlowerMe must be created to reduce and compensate for the corresponding CO₂ emissions.

With the installation at the Bundesgartenschau 2023 in Mannheim, FlowerMe won the bronze medal in the category informative presentation. With the help of roses from Kenya, the installation was able to convince the audience and the jury with high-quality roses. In addition, motifs of individual NFTs, as well as pictures of nature conservation projects were used to underpin the globe symbolized with moss and its diversity. The moss is supposed to symbolize nature, which will play an important role in stopping global warming.

Due to a high-emission supply chain, the flower industry generates considerably CO₂ emissions. FlowerMe offsets the resulting CO₂ emissions and is actively involved in nature conservation and regenerative projects
